Everything you need to learn to type

The whole course from the website, in an app of its own.
  • Ten lessons

From the home row to the whole keyboard, starting with Meet the keyboard. Stars come from accuracy, never speed.

  • Finger guide and hands

The lit key and the raised finger always agree, with a full chart of which finger presses each key.

  • Practice and weak keys

Drills by row, by hand, with words and sentences, and practice built from the keys you miss most.

  • Typing tests and history

Every test length, including your own, with your history and personal bests.

  • Two games

Catch the Letter, 14 levels, and Rocket Typing, 12 stages, each with Relaxed, With lives and Challenge.

  • Progress

Your lessons, tests and games, with your speed, accuracy and weak keys, key by key.

  • 17 keyboard layouts

US, UK, German, French, Spanish and more, chosen from the button on the right edge of the window.

  • Works offline

No internet needed to learn. Your progress is saved on your computer, for your Windows user.

  • Export and restore

Save your progress to a file as a backup, and bring it back from that file.

  • Made to be comfortable

Light and dark themes, sound you can switch off, a short tour, and Help inside the app.

Install in three steps

  1. Download

Save the installer from this page. It is about 3 MB.

  2. Run it

Open the file. Windows warns about it first, because it is not signed: see below.

  3. Start typing

Typekaro opens from the Start menu. No account, and no internet needed from here on.

The installer is not signed, so Windows will warn you

Your browser may say the file is not commonly downloaded, and Windows may show “Windows protected your PC”. If you downloaded it from this page and its checksum matches (below), choose More info, then Run anyway.

On some computers Windows will not let it run at all, for example with Smart App Control turned on, or on a school or work computer with its own rules. Do not turn those protections off for Typekaro. Ask whoever looks after the computer, or use Typekaro here in your browser.

Check your download

Recommended. It shows the file is exactly the one published here. Open PowerShell in the folder you saved it to, run the command, and compare what it prints with the checksum. Capital and small letters do not matter; if anything else differs, do not run the file.

The desktop app or the website?

Both are free and teach the same way. The app is for learning offline; the website has accounts and classes.

Questions

How do I back up my progress?

In the app, open Progress, then Manage your data, then Export. The file is saved to your Downloads folder; copy it somewhere safe, such as a USB stick. Restore, in the same place, brings it back. Do this before you install a new version. A backup lowers the risk of losing progress; it cannot remove every risk, for example if the file is lost too.

How do I update?

There is no automatic update. A new version is announced on this page: back up your progress, download the new installer and run it. 0.1.0 is the first version, so updating over an earlier one has not been tried yet, which is why the backup matters.

What happens to my progress if I uninstall?

Settings, Apps, Typekaro, Uninstall. The uninstaller offers Delete the application data. Leave it unticked and your progress stays on the computer, ready if you install again. Tick it only if you want your progress gone.

Does it need the internet?

Not for learning. Only if your computer lacks Microsoft Edge WebView2, which Windows 11 and an up-to-date Windows 10 already have: then the installer downloads it from Microsoft, once.

What does the app keep, and what does it send?

It saves your progress on your computer, for your Windows user. It saves results, not the words you type: speed, accuracy, and for each key how often you typed it right and which keys you pressed instead. It has no account, nothing in it measures how you use it (unlike this website, where analytics run only if you agree), it does not connect to the internet itself, and it does not send your progress anywhere.

Its window is drawn by Microsoft Edge WebView2, part of Windows, which connects to Microsoft by itself, for example for its own settings and updates, and can report crashes to Microsoft. The third-party software in the app and its licences are listed inside it, in Help. This website's privacy page describes the website.

Is it free?

Yes, completely, like learning on the website. There is nothing to buy in the app.

What has been tested in 0.1.0

This is the first version. Here is what has been tried, and what has not yet.

Tested

  • Installing on a Windows 11 computer, then learning and playing in it.
  • Progress kept through an uninstall and a reinstall, with Delete the application data left unticked.
  • Progress removed by an uninstall with Delete the application data ticked.
  • Exporting a backup and restoring it, in the installed app.
  • Only one copy runs at a time; opening it again brings the open window to the front.

Not tested yet

  • Updating over an earlier version, because 0.1.0 is the first.
  • Installing on a computer without WebView2.
  • A power cut while Typekaro is saving.
  • Real UK, German and other keyboards: their layouts were checked in software.
  • A screen reader, and display scaling of 175% or more on a small screen.

May we count which parts of Typekaro get used? Never what you type, and never who you are. Typekaro works exactly the same either way. What this means
